Brussels Sprouts, Favorite Painters and "From Scroll to Screen" Lev Grossman's article on Pubbing Revolutions

I'm posting random treats!

First, thanks to Sam de la Pena and Mel Corbett for gifting me with two Versatile Blog Awards. Sam describes himself as an author/nursing student/bleeding heart heretic. I've really been enjoying his posts. Visit his witty blog here. Mel writes speculative fiction. Take a look at her blog here. As for the Versatile confessions that I'm supposed to reveal when granted this award, I'll give you a few. Um... I love Brussels Sprouts sauteed with peanut butter; I love the shows Louis CK and Celebrity Rehab (I know, I should be ashamed of the latter, but Dr. Drew is addictive). And, some of my favorite artists are Janet Fish, Charles Burchfield and Alexis Rockman, two of whom have seen my paintings, which is amazing in itself. One of my prized possessions is a Burchfield drawing of thistle my hubby gave me. Above, from left to right, is Burchfield's Four Seasons, and a Janet Fish painting. On the bottom, is an Alexis Rockman, who speaks to bio-tech and climate change.

Next, here's a link to author, Lev Grossman's New York Times article "From Scroll to Screen" on revolutions in reading that include the ancient use of scrolls, the invention of the Guttenberg Press that spawned an explosion in "codex" literacy, and the rise of eBooks that democratize the publishing playing field. Read it here. Lev has written The Magician and The Magician King.

  1. Brussel sprouts sauteed in peanut butter??? I've never heard of such a thing... I must try this at once!

  2. Catherine, I never would've guessed you like Celebrity Rehab. I couldn't sit through that. You have a stronger stomach than I do. Well, you must if you eat Brussel sprouts and peanut butter. :) I love learning little things like this about other writers. I have so many weird traits. It's nice to see I'm not the only one.

  4. Yes, there's something about Drew Pinsky that I like. His compassion feels real (I can almost hear people cackling at this).
And yeah, Burchfield's elemental experience of landscape resonates with mine. He sees and records the energetic forces of nature. Awesome!

  5. The most astonishing flavor combinations can be the very best. There is restaurant here in the wilds of BC called The Outer Clove which sells garlic cookies and deserts! As for your guests, well, I'm with Sam, a bleeding heart heretic.

Thanks for the little party, I never know what's on the menu when I make my way here...!

  6. Hahaha, Cathy, same with your blog. Dunno about garlic cookies! But that made me remember a kind of cumin cookie I made last winter. It ROCKED. My family was inhaling them.

  7. Beautiful artwork. You know, I've never eaten brussel sprouts. I seldom try new dishes. :)

  8. People either LOVE Brussels sprouts or HATE 'em. It's not a lukewarm middle-of-the-road kind of veggie.

  9. Random treats, indeed . . . Congrats on the Versatile Blogger award. As a former recipient myself, I confess I had fun revealing things about myself and discovering a few other terrific blogs in the process. The paintings here are gorgeous . . . and I love Brussels sprouts (roasted, my favorite). Maybe time to expand my repertoire.

  10. Peeled raw broccoli stems. Yum. My daughter says I am a rabbit.

...I can see Burchfield's influence in your paintings, Catherine. Hey, why not post some of those images on your blog?
