3+3, My fave Isley Album |
I is for incredible musicians that start with I, for the
A to Z challenge.
The Isley Brothers is still one of my all-time favorite bands. I love their combination of soul and funk-rock.
Ernie Isley, the youngest brother was only 11 years-old when Jimi Hendrix began playing as a tour guitarist for the Iselys. Jimi was a huge influence on the young Ernie, who grew up to play a wicked rock guitar himself that rivals that of Hendrix.

Ernie Isley |
Charles Ives (1874-1954) was an experimental musician, and a true American maverick. In 1902, he "quit" traditional music as an organist to embrace experimental music such as the piece Central Park in the Dark, and a sort of "cosmic landscape" of The unanswered Question. In 1915, he composed the Universe Symphony, which he described as "aspiring to paint the creation, the mysterious beginnings of all things."
Which musicians do you think are incredible? True mavericks?
I really like The Mountain Goats. Their lyrics are awesome. Check out "No Children"

As much as I thought I knew about Hendrix, I never knew he played with the Isley's. Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteYes, and Ernie Isley still plays Hendrix during his tours. That's what was so amazing about them back in the day-they mixed R&B with psychedelic rock.
ReplyDeleteOooo. Good one. I'd have to say Maynard-lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle and the band Yes. There are so many others but those stand out.
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't have any favourite musicians starting with 'I' but I do enjoy Bob Dylan's lyrics and, recently, Angus & Julia Stone, whose voices are cracklingly beautiful. Thanks for sharing on The Isley Brothers and Charles Ives!

ReplyDeleteI never knew this. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI actually can't think of any I musicians that I like. So I checked out on my music and came up with In-Grid. :-)
ReplyDeleteNo 'I' musicians for me, either, but it was interesting to read this post! :D
ReplyDeleteI, also, don't have any I musicians in my Ipod (but I have an Ipod, that starts with I ;)). I'm the absolute worst for remembering musician's names though, truly. Even if I'd had any I musicians I wouldn't have known it until I checked my playlists LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy A to Z :)

Lynn, I do like Roseanne Cash, and Rhonda, good one thinking up I for iPod. Claudine, you taught me a new adjective in "crackingly." Is that a British ism? Okay, here's a band I almost put on the I list for being so BAD that they're good: Insane Clown Posse. :). I think I'm going to post a whole host of really OUT THERE art/music book stuff on the K day--K in that case standing for Kooky, so check back then!
ReplyDeleteI'd agree with you that the Isley Brothers are top-of-the-line musicians. Didn't know Jimi Hendrix played with them.
ReplyDeleteJL Campbell, yay, you have the honorable distinction of being my 300th follower!!! Thanks so much! I'm tipping my coffee cup to you and doing the happy dance to Ernie Isley rocking out.
ReplyDeleteGreat "I" post! There are so many modern-day funk and soul bands out here now, and I'll bet many of them were inspired by the Isleys.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite "I" band would be Iron Maiden (seriously) but I love all genres!
Happy A - A-ing!
Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog :-) How wonderful to be teaching on Seriphos this summer! As far as musicians go, The Decemberists have me raving on about them and boring everyone else. Colin Meloy is a real poet and they seem to just make the kind of music they like, no attempt to be mainstream. If you haven't heard them, I recommend you check them out! Lots of different sounds from one band and very theatrical as well as lyrical. Nice to 'meet' you :-) LindaK
ReplyDeleteI love the Isley Brothers, JamIroquaI, IncognIto, Tony RIch, PrInce, Broolyn Funk EssentIals, and StIng!
ReplyDeleteI can't say enough good things about the Isley Brothers. I particularly love when they cover songs, they have a masterful way of honoring the originals while putting their own distinct stamp on them.
ReplyDeleteMy 'I' favorites: Incognito, Incubus, INXS, Ice Cube, Ike & Tina Turner Revue, Indigo Girls, Interpol, India.Arie, The Ink Spots, and The Imperials (especially the stuff they did with Elvis.)
