Cars, Illustration Reveals, Blog Tour Soon!

I'm posting a mishmash of things today. Some good deals too! I bought that Nissan Cube! Now, teary-eyed with nostalgia, I must sell my beloved Subaru Forester asap because I need the space in the garage. SO! Anyone in the NYC area in need of a reliable workhorse with a rockin' new Pioneer digital stereo system? Only 3K. My 1998 car has 130 miles on it, but have no fear. In the last few years I've gotten new tires, a new timing belt, new brakes and muffler, and much much more (Have paperwork to show). It is in excellent condition. Email me if you want to see! kitsy84557 (at) gmail (dot) com. Perfect for buzzing to writers' conventions and hauling everything from kids, to books, to your mother-in-law.

Armonk, the peg-legged boy, "fishing" for beetles, by Catherine Stine Copyright 2011

Next, I am thrilled to say that Amazon is finally offering my illustrated YA thriller, Fireseed One at a short-term deep discount--$7.99!!! (down from $11.10) Check out Jay Montgomery's wraparound cover for it, and one of my illustrations, and you'll see why a collectors' paperback is sometimes superior to an eBook. Sometimes.
Art by Jay Montgomery copyright 2011

Also, announcing that starting on Feb 20th, the Fireseed One Blog tour, Blaze Through Winter will commence. What do you think of my banner-in-progress? We make 16 stops on the virtual high-speed blog train to some pretty fabu sites! Stay tuned for deets.

Finally, I hear Fireseed One shamelessly whining for Likers over at his Facebook page. (Somehow, the monstrous five foot tall red flower seems like a guy) If you feel so inclined, he will give you a hug with his winding boughs.

What's up in your world?

Falling in Love, With a Car?

The CUBE!

Cool Cube bar-less window

I have fallen in love with a car. That's right. After going to four auto shows, and visiting three dealers, and taking multiple test drives, my new love is the Nissan Cube. When I found out the car was being discontinued for 2012, I was bummed. Until I found out that a new Nissan car with many features of the Cube is being designed for a 2013 debut!

What's so great about the Cube, you ask? You claim it looks like one of those absurd mini bakery trucks, or like a box on wheels? All true. I can handle the stares and jokes. Because I know how the thing rides! For a tall person, it's a revelation. It's 2" shorter in length than my old Subaru Forester, but it has TONS more interior space and headroom. I will never have to hit my head on the door getting in, or the dash if I lean forward. The Cube reminds me of a Bulli. What the heck is that, you ask? Google it. The Bulli's a Volkswagon's concept car--and has a vague resemblance to the classic VW bus, but it's smaller and cuter and futuristic!
Versa Hatchback

Anyway, I had just finished test-driving the Nissan Versa Hatchback when I spotted the Cube. The Versa has headroom, pizzaz, a good safety rating and it's cheap. But it's just too normal a car for my artistic and rebellious nature.

So, what do you think of the Cube (pictured above). It has a wraparound right-back window and the back opens from the side. It has ripples on the ceiling and bungee cords on each side door to hold all kinds of stuff (French bread, maps, an umbrella). Basically, it was made for 20-something hipsters and greenies. I'm a 20-something hipster at heart and I like its green gas mileage.

So, should I get one tomorrow? Say yes! Anyone want to buy my spurned love, a Subaru Forester that I've totally babied over the years? It has a brand new $200 Pioneer radio with USB port and best of all--the radio constantly changes colors! Light show on wheels. I told you I was a party girl.

Do you ever go to the auto shows? What's your fave car? What cool accessory would you like to see in the car of the future?

Dreamy Writing Workshop on the island of Seriphos!

Want to do something exciting this June to propel your writing forward? Wouldn't it be fun to mingle with a great community of writers, playwrights, poets and filmmakers? Consider signing on to this four-week writing workshop in Greece, sponsored by Missouri University’s Department of English, and open to any and all non-MU participants!
Immerse yourself in the literary life of contemporary Greece. Attendees develop their craft in workshops taught by acclaimed mentors, while experiencing life on an extraordinarily beautiful Greek island. While in Athens, participants gather with University of Athens students and faculty. In addition to attending daily seminars, students focus on a single genre of writing in a workshop.
Sarah Micklem and I will be teaching one of these: a two-part workshop. She writes fantasy, I focus on YA and new adult fiction. When I met her for lunch, we laughed over the fact that our books both have red-haired female leads and FIRE in their titles (Fireseed One is mine, Firethorn and Wildfire are hers). Beyond that, our plot lines are vastly different. Her fiction is set in an alternate Middle Ages, mine in 2089!

Writing Fiction in & Beyond Genre–A Course in Two Parts

Part One: The Art of Speculation
Genre divisions in fiction are marketing conventions. They should not be boundaries to the imagination. To achieve what John Gardner called the "vivid and continuous dream" of fiction, a writer must speculate, scene after scene: what will my characters say and do, think and feel in this invented situation? How will they change? How is the story to be told? In the first two weeks of the course, taught by fantasy/science fiction writer Sarah Micklem, we will use short exercises as seeds for stories, and draw on the landscape, myths, and everyday life of Greece as a source for improvisation.

Sarah’s novels: Firethorn & Wildfire, Sarah's website

Part Two: Edgy Adventures in Crossover Land
The second part of the course will be taught by Catherine Stine, who writes for the young adult, crossover and new adult market, all red-hot current genres. Students will have an opportunity to receive detailed feedback on work started in Sarah's class, and on additional stories and novels-in-progress. Catherine's particular expertise is on plotting, pacing and characterization, and designing custom exercises that address authors' specific needs. The current market and how to find a good agent will also be addressed. Catherine has taught "Writing Teen Fiction" and literature at the New School, the School of Visual Arts, Rosemont College, at high-schools in and around New York City, and in her ongoing class in downtown Manhattan.

Catherine’s Books: Fireseed One, Refugees, A Girl's Best Friend
Catherine's Website

Blurbs from Students: "Catherine gives creative exercises, smart critiques, exposure to different genres, and nuts-and-bolts instruction on the mechanics of plotting a novel. I began the class with a three-sentence story idea, and within a few months, I had a book contract. I can't recommend her class highly enough."

–Holly Kowitt, author of the novels, The Loser List & The Sweetheart Deal (Scholastic)

"Catherine's workshops motivated me to write consistently and provided me with literary tools and techniques that enhanced my work. I especially benefited from her insightful critiques. I highly recommend her class to both aspiring and established writers. She's also resourceful about the business of writing and publishing."

–Renee Watson, author of her picture book A Place Where Hurricanes Happen (Random House) and a novel, What Momma Left Me (Bloomsbury)

*Sarah and Catherine welcome writers of all genres, published authors and novices.

Concurrent Workshops: The Poem's Geographies - with Natasha Trethewey, Writing Lyric Poetry - with Major Jackson, Fiction - with Sarah Micklem & Catherine Stine, Memoir - with Linda Gray Sexton, Fiction - with Marilynne Robinson, Filmmaking - with Norris J. Chumley, Editing for Publication - with Gregory Donovan, Playwriting - with David Crespy & Cornelius Eady, Translation - with Douglas Unger

The Golden Sky by Elisa Hirsch (Memoir)
The night I met Cade I never would’ve thought that two years later, after we were homeless street musicians in Hawaii, we would have a little girl and another baby on the way.  Our son was born with the type of birth defects that make televangelists cringe. The “death home” gave him a really nice funeral, the kind I’d never wished to attend. We lost it after that, totally cemented in our grief.  Cade got into drugs, joined a rock and roll band, and I kicked him out of the house. That was how I met: Earl (an old man and unlikely best friend), the “big sag” (a middle aged woman who still flashed folks), Todda (the stripper next door), and Chris (a cowboy who fell in love with me). It wasn’t until I killed a rogue skunk, and my daughter nearly choked on a fry, that I gave my husband another chance.  But could our marriage recover from the death of our son? $2.99 onAmazon

Someone Else’s Fairytale by E.M. Tippetts (Contemporary Romance)

When they meet by chance, he is smitten, but it just isn't her fairytale. In fact, it could be her worst nightmare as her past, attracted by the bright lights of the media, comes back to haunt her. $0.99 on Amazon

String Bridge by Jessica Bell

That is, until she can bear it no longer and plots a return to the stage—and the person she used to be. However, the obstacles she faces along the way are nothing compared to the tragedy that awaits ... $6.99 on Amazon ALSO:  Music Sample!

Mystery

Sherwood Ltd. by Anne R. Allen
Sherwood. The name immediately conjures up images of Richard Greene, Michael Praed and Russell Crowe. Or maybe that sly fox in the Disney version. Only, in Anne R. Allen's latest rom-com mystery the fox is a coyote and there's no Robin Hood. Or is there? In her usual inimitable fashion Allen peels back the layers, one hilarious subplot after another, until you just never know what's real and what's not. Rather like the Robin Hood legend. When the Manners Doctor, Camilla Randall, flies into Robin Hood airport with a suitcase in one hand and a book contract in the other she thinks she's leaving all her problems behind and is about to start a new life. If you look very carefully you may just spot the Sheriff of Nottingham, Maid Marian and even Little John hidden away. But as for Robin Hood himself... You'll just have to read it and find out.  $2.99 on Amazon
